Premier League Notes - Week 28

Sports - Football - Premier League - Week 28

The 28th week of the 2019-2020 Premier League season saw:

20 goals - most by West Ham, Watford and Wolves = 3 each
229 shots - most by Brighton = 24
71 on target - most by Brighton = 8
115 corners - most by Chelsea = 14
158 fouls - most by Leicester = 16
30 bookings - most by Newcastle and Man United = 4 each
0 red cards
0 penalties

#NORLEI
It was goalless at the break, after both sides tried but failed to find a breakthrough. Shortly after the restart, Leicester forward Kelechi Iheanacho saw his goal disallowed after the VAR showed the ball had come off his arm in the buildup (50’). The hosts had a penalty appeal waved off seconds before that, no replays shown, I honestly thought they had a shout. A Jamal Lewis beauty gave the home side the lead, from the left corner of the box, curled into the bottom right corner of the net, Kasper Schmeichel had no chance of getting anywhere near that (71’). It’s Norwich’s first goal from open play since New Year’s Day. And the Canaries held on to the win this time, giving them hope, giving them a chance. Will Daniel Farke's men survive? Four points from safety with ten games remaining. They more than deserve to.

#BHACRY
Tense encounter. Both sides had chances, Vicente Guaita was definitely kept the busier of the two keepers. Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke were not making friends in Brighton, that’s for sure, they were lucky to still be on the pitch following their first-half antiques. Jordan Ayew broke the deadlock halfway through the second half (70’), provided by Benteke with a fine run and set up, to send the ball under the keeper and in. Against the run of play, Palace were ahead after plenty of Brighton misses. I'knew it. Zaha hit the woodwork late on. Otherwise it was ALL Albion, so many chances, so many misses, keeper Guaita man of the match, denying the home side anything and everything‬. The 24 shots the hosts had is their best-ever tally in a Premier League game. Roy Hodgson’s men move 12 points clear from the drop zone, whilst Graham Potter's side are only four points away, the other sides still due to play. Brighton remain the only side without a Premier League win in 2020 (D5 L3), with the Seagulls last enjoying a top-flight victory against Bournemouth on 28 December (week 20).

#BOUCHE
The home side were unable to clear the ball out of the box after Olivier Giroud’s attempt came off the bar, and Marcos Alonso made no mistake of lashing it in from close range (33’). Jefferson Lerma headed in the leveller through Willy Caballero’s gloves off a corner (54’), the keeper will not like to see the replays of that! Game. On. And seconds later, the VAR confirmed Joshua King was NOT offside when he tapped the ball in from close range (57’), Chelsea all over the place, conceding two goals in three minutes. Alonso headed in the rebound after Pedro’s shot was saved to make it 2-2 (86’). The Cherries hung on to at least one point, the Blues denying them a surprise win and themselves some blushes.

#NEWBUR
It ended goalless at St James’ Park, only one win in ten league matches for the Magpies, 21 chances, nothing netted, keeping Steve Bruce’s men in 14th. Burnley’s stubborn defence earned them a point, extending their unbeaten Premier League run to six matches and taking Sean Dyche's side up to ninth.

#WHUSOU
No side had won fewer Premier League points at home than West Ham this season (12 before kick-off). And you could tell*. Jarrod Bowen broke the deadlock at the London Stadium (15’), assisted by Pablo Fornals, nice slot through and finish from a tight angle after the Saints lost the ball, putting the Hammers ahead. Michael Obafemi, set up by James Ward-Prowse, the youngster impressing with a tidy finish to level the score (31’). A mistake by keeper Alex McCarthy handed Sébastian Haller an easy finish, sliding in the ball in off Michail Antonio’s cross (40’) to put home side ahead again. David Moyes’ men stayed on top after that, Antonio’s nice low finish off Fornals’ fine cross making it 3-1 (54’) and party time in East London, all tensions released and forgotten.*

#WATLIV
Weak and frustrating evening for the Reds at Vicarage Road: Ismaïla Sarr tapped in the ball from close range, Abdoulaye Doucouré the provider, fine move and turn to set the scorer up (54’). Too easy. The league leaders were trailing. And deservedly so. Nearly an hour gone, Sarr broke clear and doubled the hosts’ lead! VVD with a shocker there! And it got worse for the Reds: what a giveaway by TAA this time! The top players flopping! Not their night! Troy Deeney ended up with an easy tap up and in past Alisson (72’). And that was it. The unbeaten and winning run ended for Jürgen Klopp’s men. But they’re still 22 points clear at the top. Could be worse. Watford are the first side to beat Liverpool in the Premier League since Manchester City in January 2019 (week 21), ending the joint-longest winning streak (18) and the second longest unbeaten run (44) in English top-flight history. The Reds’ 0-3 loss was the biggest margin of defeat for a side starting the day top of the Premier League since November 2015 (Man City 1-4 Liverpool).

#EVEMUN
Taxi for David de Gea! The Spanish stopper banged the ball off Dominic Calvert-Lewin into the back of his own net, failing to deal with the pass back, no threat whatsoever (3’). More chances came close for both sides in an intense start at Goodison Park, de Gea denying DCL this time before Nemanja Matić hit the woodwork (7’). The Toffees bossed the game early on, but then the Red Devils took over. Skipper Séamus Coleman had to be replaced by Djibril Sidibé (28’) because of injury. Jordan Pickford was beaten at his near post by a shot from distance, Bruno Fernandes finding the unlikely equaliser (32’). Not a good day for goalkeepers. Gylfi Sigurðsson hit the post with a lovely free kick (57’). Pickford made up for the earlier mistake with a double save in the final minute (90’). DCL’s last-minute winner was disallowed by the VAR for offside, despite the ball taking a massive deflection to beat de Gea (93’). It was not to be. It ended a goal and point each, Carlo Ancelotti fuming with the officials, OGS a lucky bugger to get anything out of this game. Madness.

#TOTWOL
Wolves corner, Raúl Jiménez's flick causing some panic in the Spurs defence, but then the hosts broke, suddenly the visitors were in all sorts of trouble. Dele Alli eventually got a shot away, which was saved, Steven Bergwijn there to net the rebound (13’). Wolves have conceded the first goal in a Premier League game for the 18th time this season, more than any other side; they avoided defeat on 11 of the previous 17 occasions. Matt Doherty levelled the score, banging in the ball after Spurs were unable to deal with it and clear it (27’). Serge Aurier put the home side back ahead just before the break (45’). The Spurs right-back with his first goal of the season, cutting in from the right side of the Wolves box and bending into the far corner. But the visitors hit back, clinically punishing the dominant Spurs, Diogo Jota left with a tap in after Adama Traoré and Jiménez did all the hard work in the buildup to make it 2-2 (57’). And what a goal to put the Wanderers ahead: Jota turned in his own half and then just kept going, leaving Spurs behind him, to set up Jiménez, who cut inside his marker and produced a beautiful left-footer into the far corner to make it 2-3 (73’). The result moves Nuno Espírito Santo’s side level on points with the Reds Devils in fifth.

Liverpool Knocked Out At The King Power

Sports - Football - League Cup - LCFC 2:0 LFC

Leicester rediscovered their winning ways, seeing Liverpool fall once again after dominating most of the play and wasting chance after chance, the League Cup clash ending 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.

Click here for my full ByTheMinute match coverage.

It was an impressive comeback by the Foxes after being dominated in the first half. The stats speak for themselves. The Reds didn't make their chances count and their defence made them trip and fall once again.

Both sides had made a lot of changes, as normal for the early stages of the cup competition. But it was the substitutions during the match that cost dearly, top for the hosts, flop for the visitors, the Reds eliminated OUT of the League Cup, first hurdle, third round.

The match started very competitive, a professional clash, high-tempo but missing the edge, the Reds on top but with still no lead at the break, Craig Shakespeare's men holding on solid and strong.

Andy Robertson created a lot with some fine runs and crosses, Philippe Coutinho showed some of his good old magic with some awesome moves and Dominic Solanke shared plenty of chances with both of them.

But LFC just could not find a breakthrough. Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looked more clumsy and wasteful, frustrating to watch, losing the ball too many times.

Why Jürgen Klopp opted to replace Coutinho with youngster Ben Woodburn after the break, hell knows. The Brazilian had created most and produced most quality and chances.

And the Reds were punished for their wastefulness just past the hour-mark.

Substitute Shinji Okazaki, who had come on for an injured Leonardo Ulloa not long after the interval, made no mistake. It was a scruffy finish after a couple of headers and Liverpool failing to clear a corner, Vicente Iborra the last one to head it straight into Okazaki, who put in the rebound.

Klopp then took off Georginio Wijnaldum and gave Danny Ings a run-around. Another questionable move, especially looking at the contrasting experience... And score-line!

Islam Slimani doubled the score a few minutes later with an unstoppable beauty, a left-footer into the top left corner, from the edge of the box. That was game over.

Simple: Liverpool hadn't taken their chances. Leicester have. The Coutinho substitution didn't help. And the defence was lacking and leaking once again.

Danny Ward made a couple of strong saves late one, denying Okazaki a double and Demarai Gray, who both starred for the home side.

Liverpool's defence let them down once again, no marking, too much space and question marks everywhere.

It will be the same clash again on Saturday, Liverpool back at the King Power Stadium, for the Premier League evening kick-off. Leicester will be on a confident high after this win.

The line-ups will surely change a lot, but will this trend of frustration, misses and leaks stop for the Reds??? It's getting too much!!! It's just not good enough! Beam me back to the Arsenal game, please! :-S #FFS

Was soll das Jürgen?!?!?! Scheiß-Dreck-Kack!!! -.- #COYR #ARGH

Sturridge double seals EFL Cup progress

Sports - Football - EFL Cup - BAFC 0-5 LFC

Liverpool started their EFL Cup campaign successfully and comfortably with a 0-5 win at Burton Albion.

Roberto Firmino scores

Coming back off a Premier League defeat at Burnley on Saturday, and still hurting from their League Cup final defeat against Manchester City last season, Jürgen Klopp's men came back all guns blazing.

Well, not quite. The score line over-compliments the Reds, a match that was less thrilling, entertaining and impressive, more like a kick in the park.

Divock Origi opened the scoring at the Pirelli Stadium, 15 minutes in, netting Sadio Mané's cross from close range with a cheeky back-heel flick.

Roberto Firmino doubled the score seven minutes later, keeper Stephen Bywater throwing the ball into Nathaniel Clyne's path whose surge down the right wing provided the Brazilian with a perfect cross to head in.

Just when it looked like Nigel Clough's men may be able to grind back something out of the match, taking more possession in the second half, a Tom Naylor own goal just past the hour made it 0-3.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge added two more to the Brewers' misery, 78' and 83', being in the right place at the right time, in the box, central, seemingly proving a point to those watching.

The only worry for Klopp's men on an easy night out came with Emre Can's injury who went down without any tackle or contact and had to be replaced just over halfway through the second half.

The next big test comes Saturday, lunch time, at White Hart Lane, where they can really prove what they are made of! (I'll be covering the Premier League match live on ByTheMinute.co)

City lift the Capital One Cup

Sports - Football - Capital One Cup - Liverpool 1:1 Man City AET (1:3 on penalties)

Manchester City lifted the League Cup for the fourth time (1970, 1976, 2014 and 2016) thanks to second-choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero's heroic performance with three penalty saves which saw his side record a 3-1 shoot-out victory over Liverpool after the sides drew 1-1 in extra time at Wembley.

Manuel Pellegrini

The 34-year old denied Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana from the spot, rewarding his boss Manuel Pellegrini for choosing him ahead of first choice Joe Hart. The Argentinian stopper also kept out Divock Origi's header spectacularly earlier on in the match.

At the other end, Reds keeper Simon Mignolet had a very mixed afternoon. The Belgian let Fernandinho's shot slip through under his body to concede the opener shortly after the break. His side had dominated possession in the first half, but were unable to take advantage.

Daniel Sturridge gave away the ball on numerous occasions, unable to produce anything of note, caught offside most of the time, undoing his team mates' hard work, especially Lucas and James Milner.

Simon Mignolet
After Mignolet's leak, City took over and looked to build on their lead through Sergio Aguero on a few occasions. But the red number 22 redeemed himself with a couple of breathtaking saves.

It was a game to forget for Raheem Sterling against his former side. Similar to Sturridge, he kept giving away the ball, missing chances, wasting sitters, looking just not there.

Coutinho got the Red spirit back up and going late on, in the 83rd minute, seeing in the ball to level the score after Lallana had hit the post at the far end.

It finally got the competition back running and steaming through to extra time with both keeper's kept busy and teams sweating.
But penalties it was in the end. And after Fernandinho had hit the post with City's first kick, it looked like Jürgen Klopp's men were going to steel the show.

Caballero saves Lallana's penalty
However, it was not to be. With Caballero's star performance and Jesus Navas and Aguero's conversions, it was Yaya Toure who sealed the deal, converting the winning penalty, giving Pellegrini his third major trophy in as many seasons and condemning Liverpool to their fourth League Cup final defeat (1978, 1987, 2005 and 2016).

It was the Red's fourth penalty shootout defeat in the competition, making it four defeats in 18 shootouts. Klopp has reached a cup final in each of his last five seasons as a manager, but has lost four. Tough luck?

The Merseysiders can seek revenge as the two sides will meet again midweek, in the Premier League, at Anfield, where the Kop will want to see Blue blood.

Jürgen Klopp: "We feel down but now we have to stand up. Only silly idiots stay on the floor and wait for the next defeat.
"We will strike back. We have felt how it is to lose. It is not the best moment but on Monday morning maybe we can change everything.
"We will go on and we will get better. We have to work really hard, carry on and there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is important."

Manuel Pellegrini: "I was concerned about the amount of chances we missed. After that we played better in extra time.
"It's a very important moment, and it's always very special to win a title at Wembley."

My views and questions:
Klopp sounded very much like Gerry and the Pacemakers... At the end of the storm... Is a golden sky...

The stats say it all! The Reds tried hard, with more of the ball (more possession), but did less with it (less chances on and off target).

Sturridge frustrated me most, so many offsides and wastes (8-0)!!! Will Christian Benteke get a chance in the next clash against City?! I doubt it and don't like it!
Both cases of Sturridge and Sterling show, stars cannot and do not shine the same on their own.

After this frustration, we need more variation, change. The summer cannot come quick enough for Klopp. Let's hope there will be more changes then, than there were in January, disappointingly and surprisingly.

I keep thinking of the following German song that fits my (and probably Klopp's) football mood and thoughts: Was soll das?! Womit hab ich das verdient?! (Translation: What's the point?! What have I done to deserve this?!) Here is the full version: https://youtu.be/6tFoIu9nhYQ

Moyes' revenge as United kick LFC out of Cup

Sports - Football - League Cup - Man United 1-0 Liverpool

Manchester United put Sunday's league thrashing by Manchester City behind them by beating rivals Liverpool 1-0 at Old Trafford to eliminate them from the League Cup.

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez

New boss David Moyes will be happy to have avenged the defeat Brendan Rodgers' men inflicted on his side when the two teams met at Anfield earlier this month.

The visitors were unlucky not to find themselves on the scoresheet after dominating most of play and seeing the return of Luis Suarez after his 10-match bite ban.

The controversial Uruguayan partnered well with Daniel Sturridge, both forwards working well together and creating plenty of opportunities, the latter hitting the bar in the second half.

Moyes wanted a reaction from United after their derby defeat and made eight changes to the side thrashed at the Etihad.

The former Everton boss certainly saw an improvement after the restart - skipper Wayne Rooney's corner fired home by an unmarked Javier Hernandez to give United the lead 40 seconds into the second half after they were pinned back and played around for most of the match up until then.

But the rustiness showed in Suarez and Sturridge after they missed some sitters although United keeper David De Gea did have his say in that too with some splendid saves.

What a difference a game makes, the victory for Moyes making it the best start for a new United boss since legend Matt Busby in 1945 and extended his side's run to six successive home wins against the Reds, whilst Rodgers' side are now without a win in three games.

Reds Through After Six-Goal ET-Thriller

Sports - Football - Capital One Cup - Liverpool 4-2 Notts County

Record winners Liverpool were pushed into extra time before finally beating League One side Notts County 4-2 in the Capital One 2nd Round tie at Anfield.

The game started too comfortable for the home side, the Reds dominating possession and play on the first half. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring early on in the fourth minute beating two defenders to clip a shot in after a fine run from 40 yards out.

Daniel Sturridge doubled the score slamming in Steven Gerrard's cross from a tight angle.

The only downer for the home side was the early change they had to make after just nine minutes, defender
Aly Cissokho hobbling off and being replaced by Daniel Agger following a challenge from Magpie's Jamal Campbell Ryce.

Gerrard, Agger and
Kolo Toure all hit the woodwork as Brendan Rodgers' men looked nearly certain to progress through to the third round without too much of a sweat.

But the visitors pulled off an unexpected turnaround in the second half,
Yoann Arquin smashing in a powerful header with just under half an hour to go before Adam Coombles netted the Martinique international's fine run and pull-back-pass to complete he visitor's comeback.

Meanwhile, Joe Allen had limped off the pitch injured for the Reds.

Extra time brought extra pains and strains on to Liverpool after Toure was forced off injured, reducing the home side to ten men as they had used up all three of their substitutions in normal play time.

But the Reds restored their lead in the 109th minute when Sturridge squeezed in his second goal of the night under County keeper
Bartosz Bialkowski.

Substitute
Jordan Henderson sealed the win with a cheeky nutmeg through defender Enda Stevens
before curling a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 4-2 to the Reds.
