Premier League Picks Of The Week 5

Sports - Football - Premier League Week 5

The 5th week of the Premier League action saw:

21 goals - most by Manchester City = 6!!!
267 shots - most by Liverpool = 35!!!
73 on target - most by Manchester City = 10
100 corners - most by Liverpool = 12
206 fouls - most by West Brom, Arsenal & Manchester United = 15 each
30 yellow cards - most by Crystal Palace = 5
1 red card - David Luiz for Chelsea
1 penalty - 1 scored (Anthony Martial for Manchester United)

What a game! Laurent Depoitre woke everyone up with the opening goal at the John Smith's Stadium, but Jamie Vardy levelled the score from the spot minutes later, Huddersfield 1-1 Leicester, Andy King making the most of nothing by Chris LΓΆwe to get the penalty. It was end-to-end stuff after that, the home side dominating but unable to take advantage in the end. Swansea's back five frustrated the hell out of Tottenham and earned the clean sheet and well-deserved point at Wembley. Spurs are still waiting for a league win at the NW London ground, having already dropped more points there this season than at White Hart Lane the whole of last season. Arch rivals Arsenal performed so much better, fighting out a point at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's first league draw at home in 16 months. Both sides came close, creating a lot, but the Blues looked that bit more sloppy, giving the ball away too many times, whilst the Gunners stayed on top, covering and tackling well. David Luiz' stupid sending off late on added to the home side's clumsy and frustrating display and they will be relieved to have squeezed out a point. Antonio Conte's men have had as many red cards in their last five PL games as they had in their previous 73 games combined (3). ArsΓ¨ne Wenger meanwhile will just have felt that hint of disappointment his side couldn't capitalise and walk away with all the points after a het-up, intense, entertaining derby! πŸ‘ŠπŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘ŠπŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘ŠπŸ»

What a team! Crystal Palace are breaking all records - the Eagles suffered their fifth consecutive opening league defeat without having scored a goal! That's a first in top-flight history! And the longest run without scoring was broken after the 78th minute - a dry run of 439 minutes beating Newcastle's 438 minutes set in 2005-6. The rainy weather fit the mood at Selhurst Park on Roy Hodgson's return after 51 years. Next on the former Liverpool and England boss' fixture list: Man City away, United away, Chelsea at home. Will the 70-year-old still have a job end of next month? Frank de Boer's record shows that should and most probably will not be the case. Will Sam Allardyce be back in October? πŸ’©πŸ™ˆπŸ’©πŸ™ˆπŸ’©

What a man! West Brom's Gareth Barry made a record-equaling 632nd Premier League appearance (Ryan Giggs the former king, now having to share the crown, surely to be beaten next week). How his keeper Ben Foster didn't see red for his full-on sliding tackle on Javier HernΓ‘ndez, I don't know. I think West Ham boss Slaven BiliΔ‡ is still shaking his head now as I type. There's nothing more to write about the goalless draw. πŸ˜΄πŸ˜‘πŸ˜΄πŸ˜‘πŸ˜΄
Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford was the most discussed topic this weekend, replays of his many top goals shown again and again. The Evertonian had a couple of chances but did not have much to shout about before he was substituted under great applause from both ends of the ground and even a handshake from United boss JosΓ© Mourinho. The striker has never beaten the Red Devils in the Premier League. πŸ™ˆπŸ‘πŸ»⚽️πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ™ˆ

What a goal! Jermain Defoe scored his first goal since arriving at Bournemouth to make it 2-1 and a fine turnaround-win against Brighton. The match-winner came after a nice turn in the box and drill home by the former Sunderland forward. Substitute Jordan Ibe had set up both the winner and leveller, the latter with a clever backheel to Andrew Surman, who tapped it in easy. Solly March had given the visitors the lead ten minutes into the second half after Dale Stephens headed against the cross bar, Shane Duffy saw his header cleared and Davy PrΓΆpper his follow-up blocked off the line by Surman. All that action and the goals after the interval made up for a dismal first half. ⚽️πŸ‘ŠπŸ»⚽️πŸ‘ŠπŸ»⚽️
Each of Xherdan Shaqiri's last six Premier League goals have been from outside the box, including the whacker that levelled the score for Stoke at Newcastle, nice one! πŸ‘πŸ»⚽️πŸ‘ŒπŸ»⚽️πŸ‘πŸ» And Jamaal Lascelles' header off Matt Richie's corner gave the home side the lead and winner as it ended 2-1, a proper hard-fought win for the Magpies! πŸ‘ŠπŸ»⚽️πŸ‘ŠπŸ»⚽️πŸ‘ŠπŸ»
Antonio Valencia's opener for United against Everton in the fourth minute was a smacker! Edge of the box, right foot, smash, boom, bang, left corner of the net, Jordan Pickford had no chance! Unstoppable beauty! The 4-0 result was very harsh as the Toffees did come back stronger after the break, but just buckled under the pressure in the final minutes. Romelu Lukaku's goal and celebration added insult to misery. Either way, there are very happy Red Devils in second place, level on points and goals with City at the top, just the alphabet separating the two rivals. ⚽️πŸ˜΅πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ˜΅⚽️

What the hell?! SEVEN CHANGES FOR LFC! 34 SHOTS ON GOAL! But Burnley remained unbeaten away in the Premier League, after winning at Chelsea and drawing at Tottenham, but haven't won at Anfield for 43 years, Liverpool having won all three previous home games against the Clarets. Man of the moment Mohamed Salah equalised three minutes after Scott Arfield had given the visitors the lead with a nice volley. Ben Mee came close to net a winner, JoΓ«l Matip clearing off the line. Clarets keeper Nick Pope kept well and strong to deny JΓΌrgen Klopp's men. The Reds were frustrated once again, similar to the Sevilla game on Wednesday. Argh! Just ARGH for all Red fans! πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‘πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‘πŸ™ˆ
Loved seeing Elton John and Pep Guardiola chatting before the game at Watford! Only in England... "1-0 to the referee" chant by the Hornets fans was a brilliant response to Sergio AgΓΌero's goal that gave Man City the lead at Vicarage Road. It was so close, even the Argentine was looking back at the linesman to make sure the flag wasn't up... But the game was sealed soon after, the same striker doubling the score a couple of minutes later, making it eight consecutive away games he has started and scored in (only RvP has a longer run of 9). Gabriel Jesus made it 0-3 before the break, another dodgy offside- looking one. What was the flag there for again??? NicolΓ‘s Otamendi added to the home side's misery in the second half and AgΓΌero completed his hat-trick to make it 0-5 (his sixth in the PL, the only guys left to beat are Alan Shearer with 11, Robbie Fowler 9, Michael Owen and Thierry Henry with 8). Add a Raheem Sterling penalty to seal the deal 0-6, it was all too easy and ended Watford's unbeaten run. Why couldn't Liverpool do that?!?!?! City fans' reaction: "We're taking the piss!" -  with 15 goals to nil in three games for the Citizens, yes, you are taking the piss! Lol! πŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘ŠπŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜‚
Oh, and how could I forget the Super Sunday clash between the Red Devils and the Angry Birds! 😈 v πŸ•Š yep, you read right! LMAO! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ˆπŸ˜‚πŸ•ŠπŸ˜‚

Premier League Picks Of The Week 5

Sports - Football - Premier League - Week 5

The fifth week of the Premier League action saw:

266 shots - most by Tottenham = 31

36 goals - most by Palace, Arsenal, Man City and West Brom = 4 each

222 fouls - most by Man United = 19

43 bookings - most by Sunderland = 6

3 red cards - Januzaj (SAFC), Nolito (MCFC) and Livermore (HCFC)

4 penalties - 3 scored

THAT Henderson goal - English commentary, much criticised

THAT Henderson goal - Spanish commentary, went viral

Guardiola's pick, harsh or cheep dig or just the truth?

What a game! Man Who? Mourinwho? Sorry for the cheep dig, but after their third defeat on the trot in the same week, the form has not followed the big words, build-up and hype around the Special One taking over at Old Trafford from under-fire LVG. It's Jose's worst start/run since he was at Porto in 2002. No discrediting Watford. The Hornets had a great game, with plenty of chances to make the scoreline much worse for the Red Devils who looked all over the place who looked all over the place. The home side were on fire, United in bits, Walter Mazzari can and must be a very happy man looking at the last couple of weeks, great games with plenty of goals and maximum points, what more can you ask for.

What a team! Man City remain the untouchables, the only side left in the Premier League with a 100% record having won 5 out of 5. And they cruised past Bournemouth, sweeping them away 4-0. The only catch for them was to see Nolito sent off needlessly. It looks like nothing can stop them st the moment, Pep Guardiola more than proving last week that he's more than up for the challenge.

What a man! Gareth Barry impressed on his landmark 600th top-flight appearance for Everton, but my vote of the week goes to MOTM Nacer Chadli and his double for West Brom, easing the pressure on manager Tony Pulis after dismantling West Ham 4-2. Hammer boss Slaven Bilic will be wondering what has hit the Hammers so low, down to 18th after their fourth defeat.

What a goal! Jordan Henderson's smacker of a goal that doubled Liverpool's lead at Stamford Bridge before the break didn't just gob-smack me, it punched the living daylights out of Chelsea. Diego Costa did pull one back in the second half, but the Blues never looked all too threatening, suffering their first defeat under Antonio Conte. Red boss JΓΌrgen Klopp could not have been more delighted - even though the crazy German did keep his glasses on this time...

What the hell?! That's what David Moyes must be thinking. His side kept solid against Tottenham and looked like they could get something out of the match, but they broke eventually. It was not a convincing win for Spurs, hence the more frustrating for the Black Cats.
And what was Alexis Sanchez thinking?! Taking and missing a penalty instead of regular taker Santi Cazorla - even his boss Arsène Wenger didn't have a clue why or how that came around?!

My predictions - Actual results
Chelsea 0:1 Liverpool - 1:2 - click here for my match report
Hull City 2:2 Arsenal - 1:4
Leicester 1:1 Burnley - 3:0
Man City 3:2 Bournemouth - 4:0
West Brom 0:0 West Ham - 4:2
Everton 1:1 Middlesbrough - 3:1
Watford 3:3 Man United - 3:1
Crystal Palace 1:1 Stoke City - 4:1
Southampton 1:1 Swansea - 1:0
Tottenham 4:1 Sunderland - 1:0

Week 26: Premier League Tops & Flops

Sports - Football - Premier League - Picks of the Weekend

WOW!

Pablo Hernandez scores Swansea's third against QPRSwansea wiped QPR away, showing the big gaping gap between the two sides. The Welsh side are having everything else but the second season syndrome, sitting comfortably in the top half of the table, in eighth place, whilst Harry Redknapp has been assigned to a lost cause, sitting at the bottom of the table, seven points from safety. QPR were shambolic and the Swans were able to make the most of it.

OMG!

Jay Rodriguez fires narrowly wide for SouthamptonManchester City's defeat against Southampton was shocking! No discrediting the Saints and their strong display and stubbornness, but the Champions looked the shadow of the fighting team and players they used to be and they still have! Are Roberto Mancini's men missing Mario Balotelli = some ATTITUDE?! Gareth Barry's header into the back of his own net completed a nightmare afternoon for City, widening the gap to rivals United at the top to twelve points. Southampton meanwhile move into 15th, four points clear of the relegation zone, after their first win under Mauricio Pochettino.

TOP!

Ryan GiggsAs mentioned above, United are now twelve points ahead of their City rivals after a routine-win against Everton. I feel and think that is a more than comfortable gap/seat/throne at the top of the table, their name and with it their 20th title already engraved on it! Looking at the next five opponents on both sides' (Premier League) fixture list, I feel and think again, that by the time the two rivals meet in April, the title race will already be over and decided. I hope not, for entertainment sake and value, but have to stay realistic.

FLOP!

Gareth McAuley opens the scoringNo discrediting West Brom, but their win at Anfield was nearly comical. Liverpool had so many chances, including a penalty, all off target. Ben Foster was on form and did his job too, that's for sure, same goes for his defence. But the Reds went down to ninth, one point behind West Brom in eighth, even though they could and should have been a couple of goals ahead and settled the game by half time! The result means Liverpool are still to beat a team currently in the top half of the Premier League table this season.

HERO!

Tottenham's Gareth BaleGareth Bale scored and starred yet again, two goals and three points for Tottenham in a highly competitive game against Newcastle. This brought his total to 13, four goals in three league games, not bad for a midfielder! And he could have had a double-hat-trick if he had netted all chances! But Andre Villas-Boas and the fans at a packed White Hart Lane will have forgiven him after leaving the ground all smiles and three points richer in fourth, one point behind Chelsea in third and four points clear of bitter rivals Arsenal in fifth.

ZERO!

Jason Puncheon celebrates after putting Southampton aheadEngland keeper Joe Hart's blooper which conceded the second goal epitomised City's fall against the Saints, the blue Mancs looked like a sinking ship, a hobbling runner from start to finish. As mentioned above, Barry's headed own goal put a very sour icing on a very bitter cake for City. The first goal came after a Barry giveaway too! It was just a collection of total shambles! Mancini's men have Chelsea next on their (Premier League) fixture list, who have made a fine comeback from their own set of shambles with a 4-1 thrashing of Wigan. I'm curious which side will step up and make a match rather than a mess of it next weekend!

My Predictions => Actual Results:
Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle => 2-1
Chelsea 2-1 Wigan => 4-1
Norwich 0-0 Fulham => 0-0
Stoke 0-0 Reading => 2-1
Sunderland 0-1 Arsenal => 0-1
Swansea 2-2 QPR => 4-1
Southampton 2-3 Man City => 3-1
Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham => 2-1
Man United 2-2 Everton => 2-0
Liverpool 2-0 West Brom => 0-2

Ten-man City ease past Liverpool

Sports - Football - Premier League - Man City 3:0 Liverpool

Manchester City comfortably kept their unbeaten run at home with a 3-0 beating of Liverpool at the Etihad stadium and recovered well from their shock defeat at Sunderland which was just around 48 hours ago.

Sergio Aguero (left) celebrates after scoring against Liverpool

Although, as always, there were questionable decisions by referee Andre Marriner, there is no doubt over who outplayed whom with Liverpool all huff and puff but no quality as BBC's Tom Rostance summarized the performance accordingly.

Each time when it looked like they were gaining in momentum, the Reds slipped up and lost it again. First Pepe Reina, of all people, let Sergio Aguero's shot drop under him for the opening goal, the Spaniard not happy understandably.

Then, when Liverpool had gained advantage in possession, territory and pressure again, Yaya Toure headed in a City corner, past Reina and the two defenders Jose Enrique and Charlie Adam, easily beating Glen Johnson by a couple of inches.

Yaya Toure (second left) scores for Manchester City

Gareth Barry's 450th Premier League appearance was nothing to shout about, apart from a couple of harsh decision which went against him. The England midfielder saw his first booking for bringing down Jay Spearing who looked like he made the most of the brush past just before half time.

Then in the second half, after Kenny Dalglish had rang in the changes bringing on Steven Gerrard and Craig Bellamy for below par Adam and Dirk Kuyt, Liverpool started to speed and heat up the match more.

A minute of madness followed just over halfway through the second half: Barry was sent off, booked the second time for a push on Daniel Agger. Harsh again, as it looked neither here nor there between the two, although he was warned off shortly before that after a tackle on Gerrard.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard
But instead of taking advantage of the referee's decision and the extra man, Liverpool's Enrique gave away the resulting free kick very cheaply for City to break out onto a counter attack and Yaya Toure to win a penalty after being brought down by Martin Skrtel. It looked like a very soft touch, another harsh decision by Marriner, but James Milner netted it cooly to the right, sending Reina the wrong way, to seal the match, result and three points, 3-0 to City.

Liverpool tried and tried, but never got very far, no matter how much possession and time they had on the ball. Andy Carrol was useless and nowhere to be seen apart from a couple of misses as always. Stewart Downing and Enrique produced the only sparks of hope with some fine breaks and crosses, as Bellamy did later, too.

But, whether it was because Luis Suarez was missing, after starting his eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra, or because of the bad weather (it was absolutely pouring it down turning the football pitch into a water glide), Liverpool never looked like they were getting close.

Yaya Toure scores Manchester City's second goal

And City did not have to make much of an effort to grab the win, it just looked too easy! Although man of the match Vincent Kompany's outstanding performance at the back needs to be noted. He kept the little Liverpool resistence there was at bay superbly and gave them no chance whatsoever of a comeback. They are now three points clear at the top ahead of local rivals United.

King Kenny hit the spot in response to Liverpool's performance: "If you want to be successful you have to be clinical, and that's what was missing tonight from ourselves. We worked hard and passed it well, but if you're not clinical you won't progress."

Shocking Reds hand City three goals & points

Sports - Football - Premier League - Man City 3:0 Liverpool

Liverpool disappointed and were a disgrace to watch - even school boys can play better and create more pressure than what they showed at Eastlands!

From the offset, Liverpool were on their back foot, Martin Skrtel conceding a clumsy free kick against Adam Johnson on the right side outside the box and getting booked early on in the fourth minute.

Things went from bad to worse when James Milner broke on the right side and cutting it back to Gareth Barry in the the centre with all the space in the world to slash it into the left corner.
The first half ended with Liverpool finally pressing on a bit more, but not creating a real threat.
Not long into the second half and it was apparent that the trend hadn't changed. Liverpool were cut open again, this time Carlos Tevez claimed his 50th PL goal, but as the replays showed, Micah Richards' header from near the penalty spot didn't look like it touched the Argentinian before it went through Pepe Reina's legs and over the line.
Then, when it just looked like Liverpool were going to make a comeback after Steven Gerrard hit the bar and Joe Hart had to make a slick double save, stopping rebound shots of David Ngog and sub Fernando Torres, clumsy Skrtel again, gave away a penalty with an unnecessary tackle on Johnson again, making it too obvious that he wasn't able to deal with the City winger.
Tevez comfortably converted the spot kick putting it into the bottom left corner whilst sending Reina the wrong way to make it 3 - an impossible hill to climb for the scrambling, clumsy looking Reds, who showed no determination, coordination or awareness. City had an easy ride to three goals and points, shocking to watch!
Roy Hodgson refused to panic despite the embarrassing defeat at Eastlands insisting it was too early to be concerned.
Hodgson said: "We are only two matches into the season. We had Arsenal in the first game which we had to playe with 10 and then a strong Man City side.
"It's a bit premature to start discussing just how big the match is. Hopefully the next 36 games we can take some points. We were a bit unlucky to get beaten so heavily.
"We stuck at it and were unlucky not to get back when Hart made an incredible double save. We lacked the cutting edge and the organisation I would like" - just a bit!!!

Unlucky?! More like undeserved! Underachieving!
