Tremlett shines as Australia are all k.o.

Sports - Cricket - Ashes - 3rd Test - Waca, Perth - Day 1

My picks of the first day:

England took full control in familiar fashion on the first day of the third Ashes Test, bowling Australia out for 268 after winning the toss at the Waca in Perth. Stuart Broad replacement Chris Tremlett justified his selection by taking three fine and crucial wickets on the day. England's bowlers showed focus, patience and stamina wiht only three extras in the whole of Australia's innings, all leg byes. England's openers finished the day safe and dry on 29, 239 behind with 10 wickets in hand.

Run of Play: Advantage to...

1st session, Australia 65-4 after 26 overs at lunch: England in control after Australia lost the toss. Only 3 extras so far, all leg byes, shows England's focused bowling. Not at their best yet the guests, but they are still getting the breakthroughs and wickets.

2nd session, Australia 179-6 after 64 overs at tea: England keep control in the afternoon, Australia getting starts but England spoiling and ending any promising looking batting or partnership. An all too familiar picture in this series for the hosts.

3rd session, Australia 268 all out, England 29-0, 239 behind with all wickets spare at the end of day one: England's day, all day. Advantage to the guests as they take a firm grip on the third Test and the Ashes urn with it.

Partnerships:

It was an all too familiar story for Australia, starts but no control, no centurions. Mike Hussey (61), Brad Haddin (53) and Mitchell Johnson (62) all scored half centuries before a last-wicket stand of 35 between Peter Siddle (35) and Ben Hilfenhaus (13) boosted the total. Haddin shared the two top scoring partnerships of 68 and 52 with Hussey and Johnson respectively, looking the most promising but failing just the like in the end, caught behind at second slip. There were some spectacular catches and bowling, but in the end, Australia failed in many ways, not able to cope with the bowling attack and gain any control.

Bowling:

Australia were 69-5 just after lunch, which reflects what control and grip England's bowlers have on the hosts' batsmen. The lower order did save the Aussies some blushes, each and every bowler doing their part to fell them down. James Anderson was everything else but at his best but still took 3 wickets for 61 off 20 overs. Man of the day Tremlett shows similar figures with 3 wickets for 63 runs off 23 overs. Spinners Steve Finn and Graeme Swann contributed a couple of breakthroughs and wickets each for 86 and 52 respectively. Some spectacular fielding and catches grabbed all the attention and advantage too, Paul Collingwood with the catch of the day at third slip, one-handed, at full stretch, jumping to his right.

Ups: For England, everything is looking up at the moment. All advantage to the guests, on the day, in the match and series - a win would see England retain the urn, Australia losing control and options.

Downs: I may sound a bit premature and spoilt, but, if England would win this Tests, wouldn't that spoil the rest of the contest? Wouldn't it take the fire out of the last two Test matches? I don't think so, because England are growing hungrier and hungrier with every successful day - they want to thrash the Aussies badly and give the back some of their own medicine England had to suffer under all the years/decades. What do you think? Please feel free to add your comments and discuss...

Hero to zero: Sad for Shane Warne that the only thing he can make headlines these days is his love life. That just exemplifies and shows what the Australian cricket has fallen to... Tut-tut...

Australia v England second Test day one as it happened

1st session:

- So, it is 0-1 to England after two tests, three tests to go and all eyes are on the Waca in Perth.

- Australia need a win desperately and have rung in changes: The hosts have gone all pace with four fast bowlers in attack. Spinner Michael Beer is left out and new man Steve Smith and Phil Hughes replace Marcus North and Simon Katich joining recalled Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus who are in for Xavier Doherty and Doug Bollinger.

- England, with a win, can retain the Ashes before Christmas. Chris Tremlett is brought into attack replacing injured Stuart Broad, the only change to the in-form England side.

- England win the toss and Andrew Strauss chooses to have a bowl. Ricky Ponting would have gone the same way.

- James Anderson kicks the match off, Shane Watson joining Phil Hughes in a new opening parternship for Australia. Brilliant catch down the legside by the wicketkeeper Matt Prior with his left glove, given, England all cheers, Watson sends it straight to review, the ball seems to pass the bat and glove, the sound coming from the ball scraping the pocket, the decision is reversed, Australia relieved, no wickets off the first over, a maiden over for Anderson.

- Stuart Broad replacement Tremlett faces Hughes on the other end, who is off the mark with a couple off the fourth ball - and bowled with the last ball off the over! What a cracker! A short one! Australia 2-1 after 2 overs! England have their breakthrough!

- Skipper Ricky Ponting already at the crease. 4-1 after 3 overs, Watson getting another couple off Anderson.

- Ponting faces his first delivery against Tremlett, I would give a penny on his thoughts right now. He clips one through floating slip/gully, no one there for the catch, it goes for four. Kevin Pietersen curses it, and the field is changes straight away, another gully put on. Another teasing boundary on the onside, fine shot, 12-1 at the end of the 4th over.

- Watson edges the next ball up and high, Strauss gets his left hand to it up in the air but no grip around, dropped on 2, followed by a single and another boundary by Ponting, the third of the morning. Paul Collingwood takes a brilliant catch at fourth slip, stretched out and on a jump with his right hand, it would have been another definite boundary if it would have slipped through, the Aussie skipper is out for 12 off 10, Australia reeling 17-2, Michael Clarke in on number 3. 17-2 after 5 overs, one wicket each for the opening bowlers, a wicket chance every over so far, two taken.

- Watson single brings Clarke against Tremlett who goes short, 18-2 after 6 overs, run rate of 3 per over.

- Another single by Watson, Anderson a bit off the mark, wide, this morning, Clarke sending the ball through the gap between the two gullies, off the mark with a boundary. Anderson needs to go fuller. Australia 23-2 after 7.

- Tremlett goes a bit fuller, Watson smashes him for four, he's unbeaten on 9; correction: on 10 after another careful single, the first Australian into double figures today. And Prior gets his 100th catch in Test cricket (in only 38 matches), the pace and bounce, Clarke beaten by a short one, finds a thin edge and out for 4 off 10, Australia 28-3 at the end of the 8th over.

- Mike Hussey on, Watson standing through a maiden against Anderson, it stays 28-3 after 9 overs...

- ... For now as Hussey faces Tremlett... And is off the mark with a single off the last ball, Austria 29-3 after 10 overs.

- Steven Finn comes on for Anderson against Hussey and starts with a maiden, Australia 29-3 after 11 overs.

- Tremlett stays on the case against Watson, who leaves one that comes back on him and clips the next from an awkward angle and ball falls just short of short-leg. Watson in all sorts of trouble. Another maiden. Still 29-3 after 12 overs.

- Hussey slices Finn away for four through the slips. Finn switches to around the wicket, much better... 33-3 after 13 overs and the end of the first hour, drinks are on.

- A maiden for Tremlett v Watson, Australia 33-3 after 14 overs.

- 35-3 after 15 overs, Finn still finding his way.

- Anderson is back on for Tremlett, Strauss giving him a spell from the other end before lunch, just a single from it, Australia 36-3 after 16 overs.

- Watson's given out lbw against Finn, Aus 36-4, it looks stone-dead, but Watson sends it for review, the ball definitely hits the boot first but was it high or outside the line, nope, JUST half-half, in/outside the line, umpire's call stands, stone-dead he is, Watson out for 13 off 40, that was just a gamble-review, one wasted, 36-4 it is, Finn off the mark with his first wicket. Steve Smith is on. Off the mark with a single off the second ball he faces. A couple of boundaries at the end of the 17th over, Australia 45-4.

- 46-4 after 18 overs. The debate is raging whether the ball was outside the line on Watson's lbw, even the 3rd umpire is seen discussing with the other officials, I think it was 50%-50%, not enough to overturn the umpires decision.

- Australia clutching onto straws on 47-4 after 19 overs.

- And just another single off the 20th over, Australia 48-4, Hussey on 13 off 39 and Smith on 4 off 15.

- 49-4 after 21 overs, they are still discussing the lbw decision, now saying it may have just bounced before hitting the foot meaning it was in-line... It is out, final, full stop!

- Maiden over by Anderson v Smith, 49-4 after 22 overs.

- Awkward Hussey single brings up 50 for Australia. Another single is followed by a six from Hussey, everything else but confident or flashy but still the maximum boundary, followed by a four off an attempted full toss, Hussey wacking and cracking a bit against Finn now, Australia 62-4 after 23 overs.

- Tremlett back on for Anderson just before lunch v Hussey on 25. Single, Smith edge off the last ball drops well short of slip, Australia 63-4 after 24 overs.

- Not Graeme Swann but Paul Collingwood is on just before lunch, v Hussey. 65-4 after 25 overs, parternship of 29 off 53, Hussey on 28, Smith 5.

- Tremlett takes the last over before lunch and completed a maiden, Australia 65-4 after 26 overs. 26 overs, 65 runs, 4 wickets, 13 over rate, 2.5 run rate this session. England haven't even been at their best bowlingwise this morning, Anderson especially and still Australia are in tatters.

2nd session highlights:

- 69-5 Smith caught by Strauss at slip...

- 137-6 Haddin is out, caught behind and out for 63, not given at first but Prior is sure sending it straight to review without a split second deliberation, the decision is overturned, Swann gets his first of the match.

- Australia 158-6, Haddin on 46, Johnson on 11.

- Tremlett back on, single from the over, Australia 159-6.

- Johnson hits a four, the only run from the over, 163-6.

- Half century comes up for Hussey, his 7th Test fifty, Australia 171-6. 177-6 after 63 overs.

- Collingwood on just before tea. A couple of singles make it 179-6 after 64 overs and that's tea. 28 overs, 114 runs, 2 wickets, 14 over rate and 4.07 run rate in the second session of the day and match. England's day so far.

3rd session highlights:
Taken from the BBC website as I had to go to work... :-(

- 50 off 91 balls partnership, Aus 187-6, Haddin contributing 17 off 41 from his total 53 off 78, Johnson 32 off 51.

- WICKET Haddin c Swann b Anderson 53 (Aus 189-7): Play is held up by what Aggers describes as "a renegade sightscreen" (sorry, no "renegade sightscreen" graphics available), which shoots off in the wrong direction and forces several spectators to move. But then Haddin flashes at Anderson, and Swann leaps to take another great catch above his head at second slip!

- WICKET Harris b Anderson (Aus 201-8): Johnson is swinging at everything, hoicking Anderson past mid-on with an unorthodox jab for four that takes him to 41. A nudge off his legs scatters a few seagulls, while JL on TMS apologises for the lack of the usual "crystal-blue" Perth sky. Harris is finally off the mark in the series as he square-drives Anderson for three, but after Johnson rotates the strike with a single, Harris is yorked off his pads by the Burnley Express!

- DRINKS BREAK Aus 225-8: I've been impressed by the Australian lower order. They've frankly shown far more sense than the more celebrated players above them in the team. Lovely pull shot here from Siddle, two runs for him off Tremlett. "That was a beautiful shot," says an admiring Michael Vaughan.

- Aus 229-8: Tremlett finally bowls the last ball of the over. That took a while to come after an lbw appeal by Tremlett off Siddle was reviewed by England and given NOT OUT - It was slightly too high and a fraction leg-sidey, but it's taking an age to get the right sort of camera on board to save Siddle. Anyway he is saved. If it had been given out and Siddle had challenged it, he would have remained out, but this way England lose a review. That's modern cricket!

- WICKET Johnson c Anderson b Finn 62 (Australia 233-9): Great fielding off his own bowling by Finn as Johnson attacks. And now he pulls one straight to square-leg. Bye bye, Mitch.

- WICKET Hilfenhaus c Cook b Swann 13 (Aus 268 all out): Not before time, Strauss goes back to Swann, and his spinner gets the wicket that wraps up the innings. Bat-pad catch to short-leg, Hilfy hung around hoping to get lucky, but the umpire finally gives him out.

- Well that was an annoying tail-end bite, more than a sting. Tremlett was marvellous throughout, Swann and Anderson were dependable as ever, and Finn? Two vital wickets, but he went at nearly six runs an over and won't be getting an invite into the one-day squad any time soon.

- CLOSE OF PLAY Eng 29-0 (Strauss 12, Cook 17): England's openers leaving so well on length. You can do that when facing the new ball in Perth, only the Aussies chose not to. Johnson bowls a ball that's so short he almost hurls it onto his own toes, and Haddin had to jump very high to collect that. Good yorker from Johnson, but these two can play yorkers. And the last ball of the day is calmly played down the ground. England's day.

FT Summary: Liverpool 0-0 Utrecht

Sports - Football - Europa League - Liverpool 0:0 Utrecht

A young Liverpool side neither got nor created much of a challenge, bringing a rather uneventful and slow game to an end as the 0-0 scoreline suggests and confirms. Milan Jovanovic came closest for the Reds hitting the crossbar early on in the first half, whilst Utrecht lost their main striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel to a broken collarbone late on. Joe Cole came closest in the second half, but saw all his shots blocked, defended and stopped. The Dutch fans have been the stars of the night, chanting and singing non-stop. Meanwhile still, as already known at the start of the night, Liverpool are home and dry at the top of the group, Utrecht down and out at the bottom.

1st & 2nd half summary:

- Martin Skrtel is the only man who survived as 10 changes are made to the Liverpool side that was beaten against Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday, and he takes the captain's armband for the first time for Liverpool. It is the youngsters' chance to impress as Liverpool are already through, top of the group; star striker Fernando Torres and former Utrecht man Dirk Kuyt are both on the bench whilst David Ngog is out with a cut on his eye during the Tyneside defeat.

- Martin Kelly gives the ball away with a terrible backpass, but Skrtel recovers the ball from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, lucky escape for Liverpool.

- Clumsy tackle by Nathan Eccleston on Dries Mertens, who goes down hurt, Icelandic referee Kristinn Jakobsson plays advantage, but later comes back to book the Liverpool youngster. He is feeling the pressure by Utrecht and his stand-in skipper Skrtel.

- Milan Jovanovic hits the bar! Fine left-foot strike, after some fine touches to break him through and clear of the Utrecht lot, ball comes off the crossbar. Looked like the goalkeeper Michel Vorm got the faintest of touches on it, goal kick given though.

- Free kick to Liverpool just outside the box after Ryan Babel is brought down by Mihai Nesu, Fabio Aurelio takes it, left-foot curler, doesn't even beat the wall, disappointing, chance wasted for Liverpool, no worries for Utrecht.

- Brad Jones has to make his first save off van Wolfswinkel swing-in shot.

- Jan Wuytens clears Aurelio's swing-in shot, first corner of the night goes to Liverpool, Jonjo Shelvey takes it Danny Wilson heads it high and over.

- Liverpool keep pressure on, second corner soon follows, this time from the other side, Aurelio takes it, the ball is cleared by Wuytens, deflected, out for a throw-in.

- A wasted chance to break for Utrecht, Barrry Maguire's cross going too far and out.

- 10 minutes to go and neither side looking to take control and break through really, Liverpool enjoying just that bit more possession.

- Needless giveaway by Poulsen, first corner of the day for the Dutch guests, Jones jumps over everything and everyone to eventually clear the ball, makes it look very dramatic.

- Babel looked like he was up and away after Utrecht give away the ball and the Reds break, but a fine tackle by Michael Silberbauer makes a quick stop to that.

- van Wolfswinkel looks down and out after falling awkwardly on his arm/shoulder, spiraling and falling down heavily. Looks in terrible pain, strechter comes out and takes him out, Leon de Kogel comes on for the striker.

- The whistle is blown and half time declared after 3 minutes of time added on. 0-0 it is, and 0 action, 0 chances it was really, Johnson coming closest with the shot off the crossbar.

- Sotirios Kyrgiakos comes on and takes the captain's armband from Skrtel for the second half.

- Jones picks up a soft shot by Dries Mertens.

- de Kogel wins the ball against Wilson, the defender recovers well hanging onto the striker a little bit, lucky not to concede a free kick just outside the box.

- Balls wasted, crosses mis-hit, not much to uh and ah or cheer about at the moment.

- Babel, the booman at the moment, takes a shot from the right corner of the box, knocks it wide.

- Eccleston has impressed tonight, keeping the pressure on the Dutch guest, is taken off for Daniel Pacheco.

- Kelly breaks forward on the right hand side, drives it across, nobody can connect to it, Babel was covered well.

- de Kogel puts a fine shot through, blocked and held by Jones.

- Chance at the other end, Pacheco's soft shot easily held by Vorm.

- Joe Cole had a golden chance from a couple of yards out v the goalkeeper and his shot is blocked and deflected by a defender.

- Cole takes a free kick from outside the box, his shot is blocked and deflected, he takes another shot when the ball comes back to him in the box, easy catch for the goalkeeper. All frustration for the former Chelsea player.

- 3 minutes added on... Corner for Utrecht, pressure late on for Liverpool... Defended, blocked, nothing really close... Utrecht press,, shot straight to Jones...

- And that was the last move, 0-0 it ends, not much more to report on this half. Liverpool disppointing tonight, the youngsters not creating and impressing much. The Dutch fans have been the stars of the night, chanting and singing non-stop.

Scouser beats Liverpool at St James' Park

Sports - Football - Premier League - Newcastle 3:1 Liverpool

Joey Barton and Andrew Carroll made sure all three points went to the Magpies, the man of the match and former Evertonian poking one in on 80 to give the lead back to the home side, the latter completing a near-perfect day for Newcastle in injury-time, when he had all the time and space, uncovered, to take a strong left-foot shot from 25 yards out and score to make it 3 goals and 3 points for the troubled Toon Army.

Dirk Kuyt tried to spoil the show on Tyneside with a cruel equaliser at the start of the second half when his left foot chip came off Steven Taylor and past goalkeeper Tim Krul. Kevin Nolan had given Newcastle the lead on 15, when he put Carroll's cross off Barton's free kick into the net.

After the turmoil of this week for Newcastle, seeing Chris Hughton replaced by Alan Pardew as their manager and controversial owner Mike Ashley hogging the limelight and causing outrage and protests amongst the fans once again.

All Magpies were back smiling at the end of this day, but still made their statement and dedications to their former manager, the win taking them up from 14th to 8th, overtaking Liverpool in the process.

The Reds had their chances and dominance in the second half, but couldn't take advantage, David Ngog and Fernando Torres disappointing with some easy misses and blatant giveaways.

That takes their away record to only two wins in the last 18 Premier League games, the only two this calendar year. It is their first defeat in the last 5 games against Newcastle and takes Roy Hodgson's away record from bad to worse.

Newcastle: Krul; Jose Enrique, Campbell, Simpson, Taylor; Nolan (scored 15, Smith 87), Barton (scored 80, Routledge 93), Guttierez (booked 78), Tiote (booked 83); Carroll (scored 91), Ameobi (Ranger 63).

FT Summary: Newcastle 3-1 Liverpool

Sports - Football - Premier League - Newcastle 3:1 Liverpool

Dirk Kuyt tried to spoil the show with a cruel equaliser at the start of the second half, but Joey Barton and Andrew Carroll made sure their goals got all three points for the Magpies, making Mike Ashley's and Alan Pardew's day after the latter's controlvesial appointment and first game as Newcastle manager.

Match summary:

- Liverpool are coming to St James' Park with everything else but an enviable away record with only two wins in the last 17 Premier League games and those make all the away wins they have had this calendar year on the road. A win would take them up to 6th.

- After the turmoil of this week at the Tyneside, seeing Chris Hughton replaced by Alan Pardew as Newcastle manager and controversial owner Mike Ashley hogging the limelight and causing outrage and protests amongst the Toon Army once again, Pardew and the Magpies are desperate for a result. A win could see them climb up from 14th to 8th.

- Liverpool have won their last four games against Newcastle, scoring a total of 14 goals. They won 5-1 on the last visit to St James' Park in December 2008.

- The Magpies have lost seven of their last eight games against the Reds. The exception was a 2-1 home win in February 2007.

- New Newcastle boss Pardew makes two changes following the defeat at West Brom: Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton come into the midfield replacing Wayne Routledge and Danny Guthrie. For Liverpool, Fernando Torres returns form his short paternity leave and takes Ryan Babel's place in attack.

- David Ngog and Fernando Torres kick off the game for Liverpool at St James' Park.

- Maxi Rodriguez sends the first attempt of the night high over the bar, a nice build-up, turn and right-foot shot, ends up a waste.

- Shola Ameobi tries a cheeky sneak-through in the box with the back of his left, doesn't quite get it, easy pick-up for Pepe Reina.

- Glen Johnson on his 50th appearance for the Reds, loses the ball clumsily with a dreadful first touch, but gets a free kick out of it, after falling dramatically against Danny Simpson's block.

- The free kick is cleared, eventually the ball ends up in the box again, a shot from the edge by Sotirios Kyrgiakos is pushed away by Toon keeper Tim Krul.

- First corner of the evening goes to Liverpool, nothing from it, ends up in Krul's gloves nice, soft and easy.

- Kyrgiakos gives a stupid free kick away, jumping on top of Andrew Carroll knowing he can't get to the ball. Joey Barton takes it, Carroll knocks it down from the right side of the box and crosses it to give Kevin Nolan an easy goal in the bottom right-hand corner, his 8th of the season. They made it look easy, Liverpool's defence not covering and made to pay for it. 1-0 after 14:35 minutes, Tyneside relieved and on a high.

- Barton misskicks the next free kick from about 25 yards out, given against Johnson for a stupid tackle from behind on Jonas Gutierrez which he is booked for aswell, but the nearly had Pepe Reina worried again, but ended up safely in the Spaniards gloves.

- Wonderful pass by Johnson, headed over by Ngog, should have made more of that, at least on target.

- Torres goes down tackled by air after he is unable to connect to the ball just outside the box, Liverpool get a free kick out of his act. The Spaniard takes it and smacks it right into the wall, Ngog's shot from it goes wide and out for a goal kick.

- Reina holds on well to Carroll's low shot, still 1-0 with half an hour gone, 47%-53% in possession, Liverpool playing some nice football, connecting well, but need to keep going to find and get something out of it.

- Newcastle give away a corner after a little bit of confusion about who was claiming the ball, the corner cleared but not far outside the box, Raul Meireles' shot bounces off the goalkeeper Krul and is cleared off the line by Jose Enrique.

- Ameobi shot it deflected wide, just, the home side's first corner of the night, taken by Barton from the left, leads to nothing as a free kick is given against Carroll and his foul on Kyrgiakos.

- Free kick given against a raging, ranting Kyrgiakos, the ref calms him down, Barton takes it from a similar distance to where the goal was scored from, but it is cleared, no threat.

- Rodriguez goes down in the box, nothing given, Liverpool putting the pressure on at the end of the first half. Replays showed it was the slightest of touches by Steven Taylor on Maxi's ankle, no reason to go down in that dramatic fashion. The Argentine is still not happy though.

- Kyrgiakos heads Meireles' corner from the left wide, best chance of the half for the Reds, with the last move of the half, Newcastle 1-0 ahead at half time.

- Newcastle kick off the second half, Barton's shot held fine by Reina.

- Cruel left-footed equaliser by Dirk Kuyt on 49:00, chip comes off Taylor and passes his goalkeeper, into the back of the net. The three defenders confusing and conceding that one.

- Torres face to face with Krul in the box after Konchesky's quickly taken free kick, Campbell and Jose Enrique caught sleeping, but the keeper blocks it well. Should have been 1-2.

- Ngog, 6-7 yards out, can't get the header right and puts the ball wide. Seconds later Torres flicks one with the back foot straight to the goalkeeper. Liverpool on top so far in the second half.

- Barton crosses the ball into the box, fine cross, Carrol should have had that one but heads it over.

- Torres puts one wide to the left, just, Krul was nearly fooled.

- With just under half an hour to go, Nile Ranger comes on for Shola Ameobi who looks like he has taken a knock. Caroll wins the ball and Newcastle break from the left, Ranger nearly scoring with his first and second touch, putting the ball wide. What a wonder-sub he would have been...

- The Ranger is hungry... A free kick given against him after running and turning the Red defence mad...

- Ngog goes off bleading after his head clashed between Kyrgiakos and Bartone, the teams questioning each other about the incident but it all ends up in handshakes and backtapps, Ryan Babel is on.

- Konchesky loses the ball, Carroll and Ranger pressurising the Reds back line, give away a free kick though. Newcastle a changed side with the Ranger, much more positive, adventurous and outgoing. See if they will get something out of it.

- Guttierez bring down Johnson on the right side outside the box, clumsy but did not have many options. Ball ends up with Lucas Leiva and high and wide, nowhere near the goal.

- And there it is: Sketchy Liverpool defending, Carroll winning a header again, into the box, Joey Barton focused on the ball, claims it easily with no Liverpool player really covering or coming in, Reina nowhere inbetween, hesitant, Barton pokes it in with his right foot. It was coming, Newcastle lead again, 2-1 on 79:39.

- Cheik Tiote takes one for the team, booked for bringing down goalbound Torres, free kick comes to nothing.

- Second changes made by Liverpool and Newcastle, Alan Smith on for Nolan and Milan Jovanovic on for Maxi Rodriguez respectively, about 5 minutes to go.

- Johnson heads a corner high and over, theme of the night for Liverpool, there but not there, not able to take advantage when they were on top - just the one goal off Newcastle's mix-up.

- Carroll completes a perfect day for Newcastle on 90:36, nobody closes in on him, left-foot shot from 25 yards with loads of space, strong shot, strong goal, strong statement by Newcastle. Another away defeat for Liverpool.

- The ref blows the whistle to cheers by the Toon Army, recrimination before the game, celebration after, Newcastle 3-1 Liverpool.

HT Summary: Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

Sports - Football - Premier League - Newcastle 1:0 Liverpool at HT

Kevin Nolan fired the Magpies ahead on 15, taking advantage of an unalert Liverpool defence. The Reds put on the pressure at the end of the first half, Sotirios Kyrgiakos coming closest but failing to make honours even, the Magpies taking a 1-0lead to the dressing room at half time, with their new manager Alan Pardew who can be so-far-so-good-happy.

1st half summary:

Newcastle: Krul; Jose Enrique, Campbell, Simpson, Taylor; Nolan (scored 15), Barton, Guttierez, Tiote; Carroll, Ameobi.

No happy return to Anfield for Houllier

Sports - Football - Premier League - Liverpool 3:0 Aston Villa

It was no happy return to Anfield for Gerard Houllier, his Aston Villa side losing in devastatingly blatant fashion by 3-0.

Liverpool were without their main trio - striker Fernando Torres missing out as his wife has gone into labour, whilst skipper Steven Gerrard and defender Jamie Carragher were out due to injury, Pepe Reina taking over the armband for the night.

Neither goalkeeper was challenged and the honours were even for the first 12 minutes until Liverpool won the first corner of the night.

Martin Skrtel headed the set-piece from the edge of the box on to David Ngog in the centre of the box for the the French striker to jump-head, nearly catapult the ball into the net, scoring a superb goal.

Hardly a couple of minutes later and Ryan Babel made it two. He was lucky as he looked offside when he took the ball and turned around from the right corner of the box and took the right-footed shot well.

Villa defender Stephen Warnock let the striker off and his side down backing away from the Frenchman thinking he was offside and leaving him free to go on and score, Liverpool continued in control and comfortably, in a scrappy game, Aston Villa unable to keep the ball much longer than two seconds, lacking options and width without Ashley Young.

The guests kicked the second half off changed to 4-4-2, booked Ciaran Clark off for Nathan Delfouneso. They did create a couple of chances, but it didn't change the trend of the match.

Not even 10 minutes into the second half, Ngog broke and crossed the ball from the left into the box, a nice pass with the outside of his right foot, to Maxi Rodriguez, who took an easy shot to put the ball into the right corner of the net to make it 3-0 and kill off an already very much subdued match.

Villa enjoyed much more possession in the second half but didn't make much of it, All the passes backwards and forwards coming to nothing, not creating nor posing any threat to Reina.

Liverpool added more pressure late on, threatening to turn the game into an even worse and really bad thrash for Villa, but in the end it stayed 3-0, the Reds bagging 3 goals and points in rather unusual and unfamiliar easy and cool fashion, leaving Roy Hodgson a very happy and relieved man, with his side's form on the mend; Houllier on the other hand, is left the more worried and under pressure.

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Kyrgiakos (Kelly 84), Skrtel, Konchesky, Kuyt (Cole 80), Meireles, Lucas, Maxi (scored 55, Aurelio 76), Babel (scored 14), Ngog (scored 16).
Subs not used: Jones, Jovanovic, Poulsen, Shelvey.

Aston Villa: Friedel, Luke Young, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Albrighton (Pires 66), Clark (booked 38, Delfouneso HT), Hogg, Downing, Ireland, Agbonlahor (Carew 66). Subs not used: Guzan, Cuellar, Lichaj, Herd.
